The 12S is not an ordinary birth certificate. It is a special, secured extract, without which an application for an Algerian biometric passport cannot be accepted.

A special extract, not a simple copy

The 12S is a birth certificate extract drawn up in Arabic from the civil registers, on a secured form bearing a unique number. It is one of the documents required for a biometric passport application, and consulates stress that it must be requested in advance, before any passport procedure. It is not meant to be requested again for every procedure: keep the original with your identity documents.

If you were born in Algeria

Everything depends on one prior question: has your birth been transcribed into the Algerian consular civil registers?

• If it has not, your birth must first be transcribed. This usually means producing your father's birth certificate, and sometimes your grandfather's.
